Dermaplaning FQA
Everything You Need to Know About Dermaplaning
At Touch Body & Soul in Hampton, we’re proud to offer dermaplaning, a safe and effective treatment designed to leave your skin glowing, smooth, and refreshed. Below, we’ve answered some of the most common questions about this popular skincare treatment.
What is the technique?
Dermaplaning is safely performed using a specialized surgical instrument and disposable blades designed specifically for this treatment. Once your skin is properly prepped, your therapist will hold the skin taut and gently scrape the surface with a blade at a 45-degree angle. This removes both the fine vellus hair and the top layer of dead skin cells, revealing a smoother, brighter complexion.
Is it safe?
Absolutely. Dermaplaning is extremely safe when performed by our professionally trained therapists using correct tools and techniques. At Touch Body & Soul, your safety and comfort are always our top priorities.
Is dermaplaning good for skin?
Yes! Dermaplaning doesn’t just remove peach fuzz—it also exfoliates dead skin cells, leaving your skin radiant and better able to absorb skincare products. Plus, it provides a flawless base for makeup, making it the perfect treatment before special events.
Does the hair grow back thicker after dermaplaning?
No, this is a common myth. The fine, soft vellus hair removed during dermaplaning will grow back at the same thickness and texture over time, typically in about four weeks.
*(For context: Vellus hair is the soft, fine hair that covers most of our bodies. Terminal hair, on the other hand, is the thicker, coarser hair found on the head, face in men, underarms, and other areas. Dermaplaning or any other hair removal technique cannot change the type of hair that grows in a specific area.)*
What are the negatives to dermaplaning?
While the benefits far outweigh the downsides, there are a few things to keep in mind:
Some clients may experience minor redness or sensitivity post-treatment, which usually resolves quickly.
It’s important to avoid sun exposure or wear SPF after treatment, as your skin may be slightly more sensitive.
Dermaplaning is not suitable for those with active acne, cold sores, or certain medical conditions (more on this below).
Is dermaplaning basically shaving?
While it’s true that dermaplaning involves a blade to remove hair, it’s much more than shaving. Dermaplaning is a professional exfoliation technique that removes dead skin cells and vellus hair, resulting in a brighter and smoother complexion.
How often can this treatment be performed?
We recommend scheduling dermaplaning sessions every 3 to 4 weeks. This allows your skin to complete its natural cycle of cell turnover and ensures the best results.
Can dermaplaning be paired with a chemical peel?
Yes! Dermaplaning is an excellent way to prep the skin for a chemical peel. By removing the outermost layer of dead skin cells, it helps the peel penetrate more effectively for even better results.
Who can benefit from dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is suitable for all skin types (I–VI), but it’s particularly beneficial for clients over 35. It’s also highly effective for darker skin tones (IV–VI) to help correct pigmentation concerns and create a youthful glow.
While men can enjoy dermaplaning on non-beard areas, they often prefer microdermabrasion.
Who should avoid dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is not recommended for clients with:
Active acne outbreaks or cold sores (treatment should wait until the lesions heal)
Bleeding disorders or difficulty clotting
Uncontrolled diabetes
Cancer treatments
Is there any downtime after dermaplaning?
No downtime needed! That’s one of the reasons our clients love it so much. Your skin will immediately feel softer and look brighter, making this the perfect treatment before a big event or a night out.
